Deepa Mehta

She was born on 1 January 1950. She is an Indo-Canadian film director and screenwriter. She is known for her filmy work in the movies like: Elements Trilogy, Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005). Earth was sent by India as its official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This film also got Oscar nomination. The movie also got Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She is married to David Hamilton. She is the co-owner of Hamilton-Mehta Productions, with her husband, producer David Hamilton in 1996. She was also given a Genie Award in 2003 for the screenplay of Bollywood/Hollywood. She was born in Amritsar, Punjab. Her family then got shifted to Mumbai, where she worked as a film distributor. She completed her education from Welham Girls High School, a boarding school for girls in Dehradun and graduated from the Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi with a degree in philosophy. She was earlier married to filmmaker Paul Saltzman. But, these two got divorced in 1993. They have a daughter Devyani Saltzman, who is also a noted actress. She then got married to David Hamilton.
