Shapmukti 1940

Shapmukti is a 1940 Indian Bengali drama,family film released on 1940. The film is directed by Pramathesh Barua.

Pratima was studying in a City College.His elder brother Ramesh Chandra was a poor teacher of a village school.When Pratima wanted to marry professor Rajendranath of her college,her brother Ramesh protested faintly.But he was bound to hand over his sister to Rajandranath and had to sell all his property.Ramesh also sold his house.He came to Calcutta with younger brother Rakhal in search of new job and took shelter in Rajendranath's house. On the very first day Rajendranath's mother adviced them ot enter always through the back door because the respected guests usually sat in the drawing room. Ramesh didn't like that and so left the place along with Rakhal. Suddenly Rajendra's father faced huge loss in his business.The family members started believing that the new daughter-in-law Pratima was responsible for their ill luck. So a seperate room was arranged for Pratima to stay in. Rajendranath one day srtood against all supertitions of his family members and decided to leave the house. Pratima refused to leave her father-in-law's house. So Rajndranath had to leave his house alone. Ramesh got a job as motor mechanic. One day day he saw Rajendranath had come to his garage to sell his own.He came to know that Rajendranath had started drinking after leaving his house. Ramesh requested him to return to his house. Rajendranath said Pratima had not married him,rather she had married his family. Days passed Pratima had fallen ill. She was waiting for her death to come.The condition of Ramesh was also very bad.So Rakhal took the profession of shoe-polishing.One day while coming back with medicine for Ramesh,Rakhal was run over by a car.He was taken to hospital.But he died.On the other hand Pratima also died. Ramesh too. In the evening at the same time three funnerul pyres were burning.
