Mrityudand 1997

Mrityudand is a 1997 Indian Bollywood drama,social film released on Jul 11, 1997. The film is directed by Prakash Jha, produced by Prakash Jha.

It is set in the imaginary village of Bilaspur named in Bihar in 1996. The film starts with the grisly portrayal of a mob murdering of two defenceless lady, managed by vested interests, and how village power players later dodged by administrative inquiries into this horror. This incident sets the tone for much of the rest of the film.

The central characters are a young spouse named as Vinay (played by Ayub Khan) and Ketki (played by Madhuri Dixit). They are quickly engaged into the midst of machinations by several powerful and petty villagers. Foremost among them is builder Tirpat Singh (played by Mohan Joshi), a very strong and powerful, corrupt and savage man who oppresses poor people and especially women with impunity. Vinay too becomes impressed by Tirpat, and under this influence spirals down a dark road of domestic violence, alcoholism, and greed that alienates his loving wife and tears apart the whole family, despite her best hard work to fight this.

The rest of the film deals with their efforts to break out of this chaos, both within their bonding as well as outside of it, and Vinay's and especially Ketki's hard, and bloody adjustment to confront and defeat the forces of brutality and male domination in the village
