Madhu Malati 1957

Madhu Malati is a 1957 Indian Bengali drama,family film released on Jan 18, 1957. The film is directed by Niren Lahiri, produced by Jamuna Barua under banner named Prpgessive Art Production.

Classical singer Sasadhar Choudhury was involved in a false murder case while saving one of his disciple from the charge of a murder. He had no other alternative to abscond. In his family there were two other persons. A three year old girl Lata, who has lost her mother and his disciple Mohit. Sasadhar indentified the talent in Mohit. Before he left Kolkata he kept Lata to his friend Nibaran Majumdar. Every one forgot Sasadhar, except the police. Year passed. Mohit had become a number one singer of the radio and gramaphone company. In the mean time Nibaran had shifted to his village home. He never discloses the real identity of Lata. To everybody Lata was his daughter. Lata was then of 18. She passed her matriculation. She had learnt to sing. Nibaran's neighbour Natabar's passion was playing chess. His only son Kamal after graduation was looking for their property. Lata and Kamal were good friends from childhood. They knew they will be married to each other. Since last 15years Sasadhar has been watching his daughter from a distance in a disguise of a beggar. But one day he talked for a while with Lata. Nibaran saw that and rebuked Sasadhar for such an imprudent act. If people could know that Lata was a daughter of a murderer, no body would marry her. Nibaran gave Sasadhar one thousand rupees and requested him to go to Haridwar. But unfortunately that night Sasadhar was arrested by the police. Police took him to Nibaran. Sasadhar's real identity was revealed. But again he freed away. Knowing that Lata was a daughter if a murderer, Natabar refused to get his son married with her. Kamal had not enough courage to go against father's wish. Lata felt so upset that she left the house that night. She decided to go to Calcutta and learn music from Mohit Roy. Lata boarded a train that night. Incidentally Mohit was travelling by that train. Lata met Mohit without knowing who he was. Lata told him about her wish. When they came to Calcutta, Lata discovered that the man himself was her idol Mohit. Mohit taught her every detail of singing. Lata's good name was Malati. Mohit named her Madhu Malati. Mohit's only ambition remained in life was to make Madhu Malati the best singer of the country. One day Lata recieved the highest honor of 'Saraswati'. In her reception ceremony a gentleman requested her for a harder 'raga'. Mohit expressed his inability. Sasadhar in disguise came forward and sat between his daughter and his favourite disciple Mohit. They all started singing the hardest 'raga' together. But just after the performance Sasadhar died. Lata became very upset by the death of her father. Kamal came to her and said Nibaran had fallen ill. Mohit told Kamal that Lata would definitely go. Mohit was suffering from lever disease. He knew that Lata liked her. But his days were numbered and he had no right to spoil the life an innocent woman. Lata went with Kamal to Nibaran at his death bed. He died after meeting Lata. Natabar then had no objection in the marriage of Kamal and Lata. Mohit was invited in the marriage. Mohit knew he won’t live long. So he sent his 'tanpura' as a marriage gift to Madhu Malati through his accompanion Mishrijee. Mishrijee left for Madhu Malati with the 'tanpura' and at the same time Mohit also left for now where.
