This one's a veritable work of art which unfolds on screen as director Rituparno Ghosh scripts a classic period story with finesse and detail. It's the look of the film that enraptures you as the story moves from picturesque Kolkata -- upmarket and seedy -- to the pristine ghats of Varanasi. The lead characters in the Hindi dubbed version of the Bengali Noukadubi directed by Rituparno Ghosh, gush reverentially about Rabindranath Tagore in the opening scenes. The tribute is unnatural of course, because Tagore is the author of the story the film is based on (and what writer makes his own characters sing praises of himself?) but not unfounded. A sensitive story by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, released around his 150th birth anniversary, Kashmakash (dubbed from Bengali film, Naukadoobi) is a fitting tribute. Set in the 1920s the film talks about true love, eternal loyalty and patience. These words might sound a tad bit dated to today's generation, but the story is progressive in its own way. It subtly takes on the social conventions and questions the credibility of marriage as an institutionRead full review2.5

`Kashmakash’ is the dubbed-in-Hindi version of the Bangla ‘Noukadoobi’, based on Rabindranath Tagore’s story of the same name. When you see it leisurely unfold its riches you know why the story is considered a classic : the interplay of power and emotions between men and women is a timeless thing, and it is as valid today as it was when the story was written all those decades ago. Ghosh’s gift in bringing a period piece alive is evident in each frameRead full reviewNR
