Asha 1989

Asha is a 1989 Indian Bengali romance film released on 1989. The film is directed by Anup Sengupta.

Milan, a young villager comes to Calcutta to establish himself as a singer. But this musical talent's dream breaks as soon as he arrives. He finds no opportunities in this busy city. A taxidriver, Bagla takes him to his slum and soon becomes his friend, philosopher & guide. The slum is not the right place for his music practice. So Bagla decides to rent a house for this young orphan. They come to Asha's house and convince her uncle & aunt to let him a room. Asha takes him to her college to perform. Music changes her impression about this innocent simple village boy. He performs well, gets a huge applause from the audience. Love blossoms. Asha'a aunt comes to know the fact and she is determined to destroy the relationship. She calls a marriage negotiator and searches for a suitable boy for this orphan girl. Asha resists and is determined to marry Milan. At midnight they come to temple for the marriage but four local mafias and Asha's aunt are already waiting for them. They beat up Milan, hit him and take Asha away. Milan lies on the floor with a severe head injury and a lost vision. The aunt forces her niece into a marriage with Dr. Vivek Roy. Asha, on her wedding date attempts a suicide. Vivek smells something wrong in the marriage. He takes Asha to his nursing home, saves her life and promises to help her. Asha returns to her uncle's home but the door is closed on her forever. Vivek again requests her to listen to him and decides to help her find her fiance. But Asha has to act as his wife for the remaining days of Vivek's mother - a blood cancer patient. Asha agrees and lives in his house as his wife. But life smiles at her. Here she meets Munny - the little daughter of Vivek. The motherless baby becomes fond of her new mother. Munni & Vivek's mother make a great impact on her. Love and responsibility gradually change Asha'a attitude towards love and life. Incidentally, Milan comes to Vivek Roy's chamber for a check up. Vivek, the best eye-specialist in the city gives an estimate of Rupees 25,000 to cure this blind young man. Milan with unfulfilled dreams begins to beg in the city streets with a harmonium. Asha sees her former fiance from the balcony. Vivek meets him and commits the operation free of cost. The operation is successful and Milan sees light once again. On the other hand Vivek's mother dies at the same time. Asha promises her that she'll take care of Munni & Vivek. Now it's Vivek's turn to keep his commitment. He meets Milan in his slum, invites him into his house and tells Asha that somebody is waiting for her. Asha quite surprised goes downstairs and finds her former lover waiting in her drawing room. Vivek is ready for the sacrifice and requests her to start her new life with Milan once again. Milan opposes but Vivek doesn't listen to him. Asha resists and breaks down. Finally it is the girl's decision to choose one of them and Asha decides to stay with Vivek & Munny forever. Milan & Bagla leave their house without regrets.
